Projekt: An Organic Residue Analysis Perspective on Egypt’s Influence on Canaan through the Via Maris: The Middle Bronze Age Vessels of Yaham

The vast history and cultural interactions between Egypt and Canaan during the Middle Bronze (=MBA) and Late Bronze Age (=LBA) transition are known through both the archaeological and historical records. However, the full extent of Egypt’s influence over Canaan, culturally, economically and socially, during the MB IIB (1800-1700 BCE) to the start of the LBA (1550 BCE), when Egypt became the imperial rule, remains to be explored. Through the method of Organic Residue Analysis (=ORA) some of these lacunae can be addressed. The proposed research aims to tackle these gaps by focusing on the ceramic vessels discovered within Yaham, Israel, a station along the Via Maris connecting Egypt to the northern empires through Canaan. Through chemical analysis of these ceramic vessels this research anticipates to shed more light on the economic and cultural networks from Egypt that impacted Canaan during the 18th-16th centuries BCE and perhaps was a precursor for the long-distance trade between Asia and Europe, which led into the early globalized Eastern Mediterranean of the Late Bronze Age.
